Maintenance Tips

How often should you have your air conditioner serviced

You should have your air conditioner serviced quarterly. It’s important to have your air conditioner serviced regularly by an HVAC professional to help avoid your air conditioner malfunctioning (although you can do some AC troubleshooting) and all the headache that comes along with a nonfunctioning air conditioner. Generally speaking, it’s best practice to get your air conditioner serviced by a professional twice a year to have them diagnose and handle repairs. During routine AC maintenance and tune-ups, an HVAC technician will inspect and clean all parts of your air conditioner. They will also perform a test run of your AC to make sure it’s running properly.

Properly close doors and windows

The less cool air that escapes your home, the faster your unit will cool your home and the less it will have to work overall. When your air conditioner is on, make sure you seal your doors and windows, so all the cool air stays in your home. If the cool air is entering your home, then just leaving through an open window, your home will never reach your desired temperature!

Install a programmable or smart thermostat

Installing a programmable or smart thermostat will ensure your air conditioner only works when you want it to. Smart thermostats let you program your home’s temperature in advance. That way, if you’re not home, your thermostat can raise the temperature. Plus, smart thermostats can be integrated with an app, so if you forget to turn off your AC before leaving home, you can switch your system off from anywhere in the world.

When to call a technician

There are some situations only a professional should handle. Here’s when you need to call in an expert.

Your energy bills keep rising

If your utility bills increase but your overall usage remains the same, one or more components of your system may not be working as they should.

Your comfort isn’t consistent

If your air conditioner, furnace or other HVAC system can’t maintain consistent temperatures, a technician is the best person to investigate the issue.

Your unit’s fins are damaged

Bent or damaged fins on your air conditioner or heat pump’s outdoor unit can trap heat inside your unit, causing performance and temperature issues.

Your unit takes on a lot of water

Excessive water, such as from a flood, can seriously damage your unit’s electrical systems. If you suspect that your unit’s mechanical equipment might have water damage, do not attempt to resolve the issue yourself. Call a technician. Electrical problems are potentially life-threatening and should only be handled by a professional.

You smell electrical burning

Turn off your unit immediately and call a technician. A burning smell could mean your unit is experiencing a malfunction or electrical issue requiring professional attention.
